For your initial response: determine the Audience, Purpose and Occasion for the following video, and then note whether or not Kutcher uses ethos, logos and pathos in his speech, and how he uses the elements you identify. Finally, say whether or not you think he was effective in his speech, and why (ex. how did he format his speech to help build his logos or ethos? How could he have better formatted his speech and why?).
In your reply: ask your classmate a question about his/her post regarding his/her thought-process regarding one or more of the determinations he/she makes (ex. "Do you really think his audience was the people sitting at the Teen Choice Awards or were they the people sitting at home?).
Audience: Teenagers in the audience.
ReplyDeletePurpose: To share his insight and remind his fans of key points he found useful in being successful.
Occasion: He decided to give this speech not only to say thank you for the award, but because he felt that since his success is owed to his fans, he should give them something back
Appeals: Ashton uses ethos by giving his background information. We can tell that he is reliable and genuine especially when he reveals that his real name is actually Chris. This slows the audience to feel as if he is being up front with them and isn’t hiding anything from them. His ethos comes from all his success and his revelation of his humble beginnings. He uses pathos by revealing his past. It makes the audience see him as just another human being. Hearing him talk about him being a teenager working small jobs creates empathy. Ashton uses logos to tell the audience that society tries to sell an image of beauty that is deceiving. Ashton was effective in his speech because his audience can identify with his argument. He uses simple terms and examples that the teenagers have experienced in order to prove his points. He told about his teenage life and the non-glamorous jobs he acquired in order to get to where he is today. He’s credible because he is honest and relatable and his advice obviously is backed up by his actions due to the fact that he’s a successful actor.
Do you think Kutcher saying beauty is decieving, in his own words, was possibly more pathos than logos because of his appeal to the potential insecurities of the audience?
DeleteKutchers audience is not only the teens in the crowd, but all his fans in general. The purpose is to except the teen choice award. The occasion is to remain loyal to his fans and ensure them that he is deserving of the award. Kutcher uses ethos in his speech to appeal to his audiences emotion. First he says his first name is chris to form trust, then he relates to his fans by showing appreciation for the entry level jobs he worked (like most teenagers) to show he is humble, and has a down to earth character. He was very successful in his format because he was able to relate to his fans and transition into the star actor we all know. It seems as though he was asked to stay around a 5 minute time limit and was able to put out all the information he wanted within that amount of time. I would not have changed the format, it was very effective.
ReplyDeleteDo you really think his purpose was to accept the Teen Choice Award, or was there another reason why Ashton made the speech he did?
DeleteThe audience Kutcher is speaking to is would be the up and coming generation. The purpose of this speech is to make his audience aware of the way Hollywood tries to persuade people how to think about issues like what beauty is. In his response he gives his definition of sexy which is “smart, “this would appeal to the audience he is speaking to since they are all teens. Kutcher’s speech he uses pathos by giving his life story and ethos when he is referring to hard work and how he has always had a job at the age of fourteen and through his hard work he is living his dream. His speech was effective the way he used his life as an example, as well as a quote from Steve Jobs, to show how being yourself and applying hard work can pay off.
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job breaking down the true meaning Kutcher was trying to express by using the word "sexy".My question to you would be, if he was speaking to an older crowd would he have been effective using the same vocabulary or would he have to change it up?
DeleteThe audience is younger people just starting to get into the real world and who are looking to famous or successful people as role models. Kutcher's purpose was to inspire people to help others and to push themselves to succeed. The occasion was the Teens Choice Awards where the audience is open to whatever the famous people say. Kutcher uses ethos by establishing that he has had many jobs, and he is a hard worker. He doesn't use logos very much. He uses pathos by saying the word sexy to get everyone interested. He also talks about how the people who made the world the people in the room live in were no smarter than the people who were in the room themselves. His speech was effective because he established his ethos first to convince the audience that he has been a hard worker his whole life so he could be more relatable, and he then used emotions to encourage the people listening to be better people. He could have used more logos to appeal to a wider audience of more intelligent people who weren't so in touch with their emotions and needed more logical justifications to be good and selfless.
ReplyDeleteDo you think his audience was only the younger people who look up to famous people as role models, or maybe just younger people as a whole?
DeleteAudience: The younger generation.
ReplyDeletePurpose: To let his audience know that you can start from the bottom and still be able to come out on top in the end, with hard work and dedication.
Occasion: By being the "Ultimate Choice Receiver Recipient" at the Teen Choice Awards he was delivering his thank you speech to his audience, thanking them because without them he wouldn't be where is he today.
In Kutcher's speech his appeals to pathos and ethos stood out to me the most. In the beginning of his speech he came out admitting that "Ashton" was not his first name, but his middle name. He then told his audience his real name was Chris. By doing that he made it seem that he was just a regular guy, not needing to hide anything and that he was nothing special, which could appeal to the audience's emotion. In his speech he also talked about four jobs he had as a teenager. Jobs that he worked hard for because he was "luck enough to have a job." By doing that, Kutcher appealed to his credibility of knowing how hard it can be to work your way to the top. In my opinion, I believe Kutcher's speech was very much effective. I say this because he not only used real life examples but he let it be known that anyone that can successful. As long as you use your "opportunities", "be sexy", and "live your life", then you can get anywhere.
Audience: His fans and the younger generation.
ReplyDeletePurpose: Ashton used his previous experiences, and his own opinions, to share his insights on what it takes to be successful in life.
Occasion: Ashton was accepting the Ultimate Choice Award during the Teen Choice Awards and thanking his fans.
Ashton appeals to Ethos by revealing his first name is actually Chris and by revealing his average upbringing. It shows the audience that he isn’t hiding anything from them. He also relates to Pathos because he puts himself in his fans shoes by showing that his average upbringing can be compared to the average teenager’s upbringing now. He also uses Logos by saying, “people try to sell you things to make you feel less.” I think his speech was very appealing to his audience, he appealed to the younger, up and coming generation, and his fans. I think the speech was formatted well for the younger generation.
Ashton Kutcher's audience would be everyone at and watching the Teen Choice Awards. His purpose was to give his audience his personal perspective on work, success, and life choices. His Occasion was having a unique audience who wouldn't normally pay attention to a motivational speech. Ashton uses ethos, pathos, and logos in this speech. Ethos by relating character to hard work rather than perceived success. Logos by relating "being sexy" to "being really smart, thoughtful, and generous". Pathos by appealing to individual spirit, saying "that everything around us, that we call life, was made up by people no smarter than you". He was very effective by delivering his tone, rhetoric, and personal experience in such a way that it appealed to his young audience.
